Abstract

899,393. Making commutators. BOSCH G.m.b.H., ROBERT. March 27, 1961 [April 30, 1960], No. 11006/61. Class 83 (2). [Also in Group XXXV] A commutator is made from a copper bar comprising a short leg 10<SP>1</SP> extending perpendicularly from the end of a long leg 10<SP>11</SP> by stamping the bar to form segments connected by thin webs 11 at their front faces and having anchoring claws 12 at their rear faces, removing the webs at the end having short legs 10<SP>1</SP>, rolling the bar laterally into an annulus, moulding a hub of insulating material 13 therein so that the claws 12 are firmly embedded and then machining to remove the remainder of the webs 11 to electrically separate the segments and form a running surface for the brushes. Slots (not shown) are sawn into each of the short legs 10<SP>1</SP> into which may be soldered two or more wires of an armature winding. A hub support is provided by a steel bush 14. In a modification, the bar may be of a U cross-section with a short leg at each end, those at one end being removed by the machining operation.
