Abstract
<PICT:0899308/III/1> <PICT:0899308/III/2> A flash evaporator, suitable for distilling water, comprises a shell 10 divided into chambers 14 by vertical walls 13 and further divided by a horizontal partition 21 into an evaporation section 22 and a condensation section 23, all as described in Specification 883,777. Water enters at 15 and passes in turn through the chambers 14 before it is discharged at 19, the chambers 14 being under successively decreasing pressures in the direction of flow of the water. Vapour from the water passes through a de-mister 20 and perforations in the partition 21 into the condensation section 23, which is traversed by tubes 26 extending through the shell 10. Cooling liquid flows through the tubes from box 30 to box 31. The invention consists in mounting the condensation section so that it can move relatively to the shell in response to temperature differences between the parts of the apparatus, and to this end a wall 11 having an opening 33, through which the end of the condensation section 23 extends, is provided with a circular collar 34, between which and a ring 35 is clamped an annular flexible seal 36, the inner end of which is clamped between a ring 37 and a collar 38 secured to the condensation section.
