Abstract
A catemenial tampon made of insoluble absorbent material contains a soluble analgesic. The analgesic may be a powder or paste applied to the tampon surface or may be applied as a solution during manufacture of the material of the tampon. Alternatively, powdered analgesic may be pressed on the outer surface of the tampon as it is being compressed. Analgesics used are aspirin, phenacetin, diphenylamine, antipyrine, lignocaine, pontocaine, cocaine or "Nupercaine" (Registered Trade Mark). The tampon may comprise layers of cellulosic material, with or without a cotton backing, which are rolled up, folded double and compressed, may be formed by compressed folded strips of cellulosic material contained in a quilted sheet material envelope or consist of layers of cotton which are stitched together by a removal cord and then compressed.
