Abstract

898,644. Electrostatic precipitation. DOWTY ELECTRICS Ltd. Oct. 2, 1958 [Sept. 19, 1957], No. 29478/57. Class 39(1). In a chamber for the precipitation of charged gaseous particles in which the particles are precipitated by an electric field on to a wire which is moved intermittently through the chamber, the wire then passing to an adjoining counter unit, one or more electrical conductors are provided and energized with a potential to form an electric field whereby the charged particles are deposited on a short portion of the wire. As shown in Fig. 1 a cylindrical metallic casing 1 having holes 4, 5 in the end walls 2, 3 through which passes the wire 6, has spaced circular conductors 7.. 10 surrounding the wire, these conductors being supported on the end walls by straight conductors 11.18, the casing and conductors being mantained at a high positive potential relative to the wire. In such an arrangement almost all the charged particles are deposited on a small central portion of the wire (graph, Fig. 4, not shown). In another arrangement (Fig. 3, not shown) there are six circular conductors arranged in two groups of three. Further, the circular conductors may comprise a pair of wire spirals having their small ends extending towards the centre of the casing. In alternative constructions the casing may be wholly or in part of insulating material.
