Abstract

829,583. Electrostatic precipitation. RAYTHEON MANUFACTURING CO. Feb. 13, 1957 [April 18, 1956], No. 4928/57. Class 39(1). An electrostatic precipitator has a precipitator unit 18 comprising an ionizer structure and a collector plate assembly housed in a case 10, the output side being covered by a plate 11 formed with openings 12 and the input side being covered by a panel 14 formed with louvres 15. A fan 16 is positioned behind the plate 11. The precipitator unit 18 comprises two support plates 20, 21 of insulating material attached to top and bottom flanged metallic plates 22, 23. Each support plate 20, 21 is formed with inwardly or outwardly projecting protuberances 24 hollowed on the inside and having ionizing wires 25 anchored on the walls thereof by a clamped bushing 26 at one end and a spring 27 and cotter pin 28 at the other end. Cylindrical electrodes 30 of the ionizer are mounted on planar portions 31 of the plates 20, 21 between the protuberances 24. With this arrangement the leakage path between two adjacent ionizer electrodes is considerably greater than the spacing between the electrodes. The collector plates 32 are substantially rectangular having projectoins 33 extending from the shorter sides over a distance less than half the length thereof. The plates 32 are mounted by the projection 33 engaging in transverse slots 34 in liners 35 of insulating material attached to the plates 20, 21, longitudinal slots 36, 37 being formed in each liner 35 to intersect the slots 34 near opposite ends thereof. The arrangement is such that the projections 33 of alternate plates 32 are at opposite ends of the shorter sides thereof. Longitudinal slots 38 are formed in the plates 20, 21 aligned with the slots 36, 37 in the liners 35. The plates 20, 21 are formed with ridges 39 to stiffen them. Compression springs 40 of conductive material gripping the projections 33 are inserted in the slots 36, 37 and project into the adjacent slots 38. A conductive rod 41 is inserted in each slot 38 and held in place by spring clips 42. A slot 35A extends centrally down each liner 35 so that the leakage path between adjacent plates 32 is considerably greater than the spacing between the plates. In a modification the liners 35 are omitted, the slots 34 being formed in the plates 20, 21. The operating circuit compreses a line 43 connected to the primary 44 of a transformer 45 through a switch 46, one side of the secondary 47 being connected to one set of plates 32 through a spring contact 48 which contacts the rod 41, and the other set of plates 32 being connected to the metal plates 22, 23, and the case 10 by a wire 50 connected to a clip 42. The grounded cylindrical electrodes 30 are connected to the case 10 by a conductor 49. The other end of the secondary 47 is connected to the ionizer wires 25 through a wire 51 connected at 51A to a bus-bar 52. The filament 53 of a rectifier 54 is connected across a further secondary 55 and one side of the filament is connected to the wire, 25. The anode 56 is connected to the case 10 through a resistor 57. A conductive bar 58 projects from the high voltage terminal of the transformer 45 and a conductive two-armed drop bar 60 is rotatable about a pin in a bracket 61, one arm 62 contacting the panel 14 to hold the other arm 63 from contact with the bar 58. When the panel 14 is removed the arm 63 swings into contact with the bar 58 to short the high voltage side of the transformer 45 and the high voltage collector plates to prevent shock.
