Abstract

Organopolysiloxanes are used in a process for the separation of sulphide ores from one another and from the gauge by flotation, the flotation being carried out in the presence of organopolysiloxanes and conventional collective or collector frothers. A suitable organopolysiloxane is a liquid polydimethyl siloxane and a suitable collector is axanthate, e.g. potassium ethyl xanthane. Preferably short-chain organopolysiloxanes are used, a proportion of their hydrocarbon radicals being higher alkyl radicals. Other atoms or groups may be linked to the silicon, such as hydrogen and halogen atoms. Commercial polydimethylsilone oils may be used; also the crude hydrolysates of methyl chlorosilanes from which these oils are obtained. The flotation result can be influenced by a variation of the proportion and concentration of the two components of the combination according to the invention. The Specification gives examples of ores treated with collectors according to the invention, and the methods of ore and proportions of additives to yield various metal concentrates.
