Abstract

Glass fibre fabrics containing effect yarns (e.g. ratine, slub or floated yarns) and non-effect yarns are padded with a bath containing a binding agent and a normally negatively charged pigment, the bath having been so-modified to increase the negative charge on the pigment particles or to change this charge to a positive charge, whereby the pigment is deposited, respectively, only on the non-effect yarns or only on the effect yarns. The dispersion may also contain softeners and dulling or antislipping agents such as colloidal silica or titanium dioxide. The negative charge or the pigment particles is increased by adding hydroxyl ions (in the form of ammonium hydroxide) to the dispersion. Reversal of the charge on the pigment particles is effected by the addition of trivalent metal ions (e.g. in the form of basic aluminium acetate) to the dispersion or, when the dispersion also contains colloidal silica, by the addition of divalent ions (e.g. in the form of magnesium sulphate) to the dispersion or by acidifying the dispersion. When the binding agent, e.g. polyvinyl alcohol, is water-soluble, treatment with an insolubilising agent, such as stearato chromic chloride, is effected during or after colouring. Yarns in the fabric which are initially uncoloured may be selectively or non selectively coloured by a subsequent treatment. Two pigments, one selective to the effect yarns and the other selective to the non-effect yarns may be applied from the same bath, but in this case the appropriate charge is established on each pigment in a separate bath and the pH so adjusted that, on mixing the two baths, the charge on each pigment is not disturbed, the pH of the mixed bath being above 7. Examples are given.
