Abstract
A shrinkable regenerated cellulose film has an underlay having incorporated therein 3-65%, based on the weight of cellulose, of translucent micaceous flakes having on the surface thereof a translucent layer of particles of titanium dioxide, zirconium dioxide, hydrated titanium dioxide or hydrated zirconium dioxide or mixtures thereof, substantially all of these particles having a major dimension of less than 0,1 micron. Preferably the thickness of the translucent layer is from 20-250 millimicrons and the proportions of the translucent micaceous flakes is from 12-20% by weight of the cellulose, and a transparent overlay. The translucent micaceous flakes may also comprise particles of a metal oxide or oxides deposited on the translucent oxide particle layer, and the translucent oxide particle layer may also comprise particles of one or more additional metal oxides. Specified metal oxides include chromic oxide and antimony trioxide. A dye may also be incorporated in the film. The film may be in the form of a secondary band closure. Such films may be made by regeneration of cupraammonium cellulose or nitrocellulose, or preferably of viscose, using a duplex die, the pigment-containing viscose forming the underlay, and a transparent viscose being supplied as well which forms the overlay. The underlay may be dyed by incorporating a dye in the underlay viscose, or the overlay may be dyed, suitably by incorporating a vat dyestuff and a reducing agent in the overlay viscose. For the underlay viscose, 3-65%, based on the weight of cellulose of the aforesaid translucent micaceous flakes are dispersed in the viscose, which together with the overlay viscose is cast through a duplex die into an acid bath to produce a shrinkable gel regenerated cellulose film. The micaceous flakes are preferably first dispersed in water and the aqueous dispersion added to the underlay viscose. Specification 974,874 and U.S.A. Specifications 1,918,383, 2,331,974 and 3,005,723 are referred to.
