Abstract

1,183,459. Coated TiO2. E.I. DU PONT DE NEMOURS & CO. 7 Aug., 1968 [14 Aug., 1967], No. 37762/68. Heading C1N. Pigmentary TiO2 is coated first with 5-15% Al2O3, and then with 3-10% SiO2, by wt. of the TiO2. A further layer of up to 0À2% Al2O3 may be provided. Coating may be effected by adding NaAlO3 to a slurry of TiO2 at 60‹ C. while maintaining a pH of 7-8 with H2SO4, then adding Na2SiO3 at 90‹ C., neutralizing with H2SO4, adding Al2(SO4)3, filtering, washing, drying, and milling at a steam/pigment ratio of 3. The TiO2 may be anatase or rutile, and may be made by the sulphate or chloride process.
