Abstract
1368601 Coated TiO2 LAPORTE INDUSTRIES Ltd 20 Dec 1971 [18 Sept 1970] 44717/70 Heading C1N Pigmentary TiO2 particles are treated in aqueous slurry by coating the particles with hydrous Al2O3, dissolving part only of the initial coating, and forming a second coating comprising a hydrous oxide of one or more of the elements Ti, Zr, Ce, Bi, Sb, Si, Sn and Zn, together with reprecipitated hydrous Al2O3. Preferably, after the initial coating, an acidic salt of the second coating element, e.g. TiCl4, ZrCl4, TiOSO4, or SnCl4, is added, whereby the 2nd oxide is precipitated and the initial coating partially dissolves; the Al2O3 is then reprecipitated with, e.g. NaOH, NH4OH, or Na2CO3. The initial coating may be formed by adding Al2(SO4)3 or Na aluminate to the slurry and adjusting the pH with NaOH, NH4OH, or H2SO4. The coating may include basic Al sulphate. Suitable dispersing agents, Al compounds, 2nd coating compounds, and acid and basic neutralizing agents, are listed. The product may be aged at 50‹ C.-b.pt., separated, and heated at 200-800‹ C.
