Abstract

1365999 Coated TiO2 LAPORTE INDUSTRIES Ltd 23 May 1973 [31 May 1972] 25433/72 Heading C1N TiO2 particles are coated with hydrous SnO2 and one or both of hydrous TiO2 and hydrous ZrO2, the coating being Al-free. Each oxide may be precipitated on to the TiO2 as a discrete layer, SnO2 first, and this SnO2 may be at least partly dissolved e.g. by adjusting the pH to 0À5-1À5 before forming the next layer. The coatings may be produced by acid-base reactions, e.g. SnCl4, TiCl4, TiSO4, ZrOCl2 or ZrSO4 with NaOH, Na2CO3 or NH4OH, or Na stannate with H2SO4, HCI, HNO3 or acetic acid, or by hydrolyric reaction. The TiO2 may initially be dispersed in water at pH 3À5-8À5. The coated TiO2 may be filtered, washed, dried and fluid energy milled.
