Abstract

897,090. Friction clutches. WARMAN, C. P., and CASH, V. T. May 27, 1959, No. 18132/59. Class 80 (2). [Also in Group XXXIV] A friction clutch comprises a driven clutchplate 16 splined to a hub 34 and having friction elements 18 engaged by a flange 20 of a driving housing 1 and by a plate 14 splined to the housing, when compressed air is admitted through a fitting 68 to expand a tube element 42. The clutch is disengaged by springs 22. A pressure-plate is interposed between the element 42 and plate 14 and comprises an asbestos insulating part 40 and a part 36 of light metal having a central cavity 50 and radial passages 52 permitting cooling air to flow from the centre of the clutch out through circumferentially-spaced openings 6 in the housing 1. The driven part of the clutch is designed to have a low inertia factor so as to be suitable for applications requiring quick engagement and disengagement.
