Abstract

The invention comprises methyl 18-O-methyl reserpate (including its racemic and optically active forms) and its salts, together with their preparation by reacting methyl reserpate or a salt thereof with diazomethane in the presence of a strong inorganic Lewis acid, preferably below 10 DEG C. The starting material may be generated in situ by reacting diazomethane with reserpic acid or a salt thereof, adding the Lewis acid initially or after formation of the methyl ester. The above compounds are tranquillisers, and may be formulated with conventional carriers for enteral or parenteral administration. Specified forms include tablets, dragees, capsules, solutions, suspensions, elixirs or emulsions, and two tablet preparations are detailed. Specified acid addition salts include those with both inorganic and organic acids, e.g. hydrochloric, ascorbic, salicylic and p-aminosalicylic acids. They may be used in veterinary medicine in admixture with animal and poultry feedstuffs or they may be incorporated in the drinking water of birds.
