Abstract

896,826. Making nuclear fuel elements; welding by fusion. BABCOCK & WILCOX Ltd. Sept. 22, 1960 [Sept. 23, 1959], No. 32390/59. Classes 83 (2) and 83 (4). The end closure of a nuclear fuel element is welded to the container in a sealed chamber which has been evacuated and filled with a suitable gas e.g. helium. The chamber is formed of upper and lower parts 5, 4, respectively, secured together by bolts 8 after insertion of the fuel element 1. The fuel element 1 is held in a chuck 19 rotatably mounted in the lower part 4 and adjustable vertically by a threaded sleeve 21 and a nut 22 which is secured on the chuck spindle 18 by a grub screw 23. A split brass collar 30 temporarily positioned on the fuel element 1 engages in a bearing ring 27 attached to the upper part 5 to convey current to the fuel element 1. A vacuum pump and a source of helium are connected to the inlets 52, 53. A tungsten welding electrode 2 is secured in a body 30 having cooling fins 31 and mounted on an insulating disc 36 which is clamped by a plate 43 across an aperture in the upper part 5. Transparent windows 50 are provided in the wall of the chamber. After welding the securing of the end closure la in the container 1b may be completed by forcing portions of the container 1b into grooves in the end closure la. In a modification, the electrode 2 is eccentrically mounted in the body 30, so that by rotation of the body 30, the machine may be adapted to the welding of fuel elements of different diameter.
