Abstract

1278530 Welding by pressure COMMISSARIAT A L'ENERGIE ATOMIQUE 9 March 1970 [7 March 1969] 11248/70 Heading B3R [Also in Divisions B4 and B8] Apparatus for packaging radio-active grains 2 (see Division B8) in metal envelopes 1 comprises a welding station P7 where balls 3 are welded to at least one end of the envelopes 1 using a 5 KVA resistance weld in an atmosphere of argon (2 1./mm.) under a force of 20 neutrons for 0À04 sec. (2 periods). Each envelope 1 is contained in a sprung-loaded, part-conical gripper 7 located within a sprung-loaded cylindrical sleeve 8 positioned in a peripheral aperture in an intermittently rotating turntable 5. For welding, a bottom electrode 10 contacts the sleeve 8 and a top electrode 24 descends to steady the ball 3 and to engage the gripper 7 with the sleeve 8 so that clamping and contact continues until the clamping force reaches the preset value whereupon the welding current is switched off and a signal is transmitted to a logic circuit which initiates ejection of the sealed envelope. Welding does not take place if the station receives a signal from a preceding work-station indicating the presence of a faulty item. The welding machine is operated by a pneumatic actuator driven by a set of solenoids and has its power, drive and supervisory facilities located outside a radio-active shield and its electrodes located within. The envelopes 1 may be open-ended cylinders sealed at each end by a ball 3.
