896,465. Sterilizing. COMMISSARIAT A L'ENERGIE ATOMIQUE. Nov. 17, 1960 [Nov. 20, 1959], No. 39577/60. Class 81 (1). [Also in Groups XI and XL (a)] An autoclave for the sterilization of radioactive substances contained in bottles 5 comprises a hollow body 1 closed at one end and having an opening 3 at the other end adapted to be closed by a cover 6 supported by a hinge system 7. A drawer 4 slidable on runways 20 within the body 1 may be withdrawn to the Fig. 1 position when the cover 6 is removed to permit the bottles to be removed from or placed in the drawer. The cover is moved by levers 23 controlled by cranks 24 driven by a shaft 26 through a reduction gear 25. The bottles 5 and drawer 4 may be moved by a remote-controlled gripper and the autoclave may be surrounded by a lead shield (not shown). The body 1 has inner and outer walls 10, 11 with the space 12 therebetween partly filled with water 13 heated by electrical resistances 8a, 8b. The temperature is detected by a thermometer 29 and the pressure by a gauge 31. A desired sterilization temperature is maintained within the autoclave for a predetermined time by a control system described with reference to Fig. 4 (not shown), and including a time switch, a thermostat system comprising the thermometer 29 and a manostat system comprising the gauge 31.
