Abstract

971,105. Shielded containers for radio-active material. COMMISSARIAT A L'ENERGIE ATOMIQUE. Oct. 9, 1962 [Oct. 25, 1961], No. 38230/62. Heading B4Q. A shielded chamber intended for transporting damaged irradiated fuel elements comprises, Fig. 1, a lead body 1 formed with a cylindrical cavity 3 closed by a vertically movable door 4. The cavity 3 receives a lead-filled plunger 5 and a removable container 9 for accommodating a fuel element. A plug 10 for seating the open end of the container 9 is initially retained in a recess 6 in the door 4 by a spring finger 8 (Fig. 2, not shown). In use, the plug 10 is attached to the door 4 and the latter is raised so that the empty container 9 may be pushed to the right by a member attached to the stem of the plunger 5. The fuel element is inserted and the container is withdrawn into the cavity 3, the door 4 then being closed. The container is advanced towards the door by the plunger 5 so that its plug 10 is forced into the container. To remove the filled container from the cavity the door is raised, leaving behind the plug 10, the container then being ejected by the plunger 5. The sequence of operations is illustrated in Figs. 3a-3g (not shown). A modified chamber described with reference to Fig. 4 (not shown) is loaded in the vertical position and has a horizontally slidable door, the plug being attached to the door by remotely operated means. The plunger is raised by a screw-jack operated by a remotely-controlled electric motor.
