A device for handling a radio-active element in the form of a thread or wire, e.g. a thermocouple, and enabling the element to be withdrawn from a cell and deposited in a store, comprises a lead body 1 having a cavity 2 normally closed by a hinged cover 32. A tube 30 enables the wire or thread to be introduced into the cavity 2 from the outside through a hole 31. A passage 4 in the body 1 receives a rotatable tube 6 having slots 7, 8 at one end, this tube receiving a plunger 24 biased by a spring 20 so that a cross-pin 26 on the plunger normally occupies the position shown at one end of the slots. In use, the device is tilted so that it rests on the portion 47 of the base 44, the cover 32 is opened and one end of the wire or thread is inserted into the tube 30 and engaged in the slots 7, 8. The cover is closed and after tilting the device so that it rests on the base portion 45 the tube 6 is rotated by a handle 15 to wind up the wire or thread. The device is lifted by a ring 50 to a storage receptacle where the cover 32 is opened and the plunger 24 smartly depressed to eject the coiled-up thread or wire from the slots 7, 8.
