To facilitate removal of a vessel 7 containing radioactive substance from a shielded enclosure 1 after removal of a plug 3, a spring 9 is provided, the lower end turn 8 of the spring being connected to the vessel 7 whilst its other end turn is connected to a plate 10. When the plug 3 is in position it is abutted by the plate 10, removal of the plug enabling the spring to lift the plate to the position 10<SP>1</SP> where it may be gripped by remote handling apparatus.
