Abstract

1,222,835. Container filling apparatus. B. P. BOWMAN. 6 April, 1968, No. 16669/68. Heading B8C. To protect a container against bursting while powdered material is charged into it then compacted, a tapered sleeve, of slightly smaller cross-sectional dimensions than those of the container, is introduced into the latter wider end first, the material then being fed in and compacted. As the sleeve withdraws, the material expands into the space vacated by it. Material in a movable hopper 26 is dropped through a guide 30 on the end of which is the sleeve 40, earlier lowered into the container 12. When the hopper withdraws, a plunger 22 compacts the material and stays in its lowered position while the sleeve is raised.
