Abstract
895,984. Moulding electrical insulation. FERGUSON (ELECTRICAL ENGINEERS) Ltd., J. R., FERGUSON, J. R., and MALES, R. J. May 25, 1960 [June 12, 1959], No. 20155/59. Class 87(2). An electrical stress distribution or controlling layer is included in electrical insulation of circular cross section e.g. in an electrical bushing by embedding the layer in insulating resin during moulding, the layer being of such form as to allow contraction in the radial dimension when the resin shrinks during curing. A stress distributing layer 12 comprises a wrapped-round sheet with overlapping ends 13 which allows contraction of the layer with the resin. The layer is located in the mould by pre-formed mouldings and upper and lower ends 14 of the layer are rolled over at 14 to avoid having an edge at a point of electrical stress. In the embodiment of Figs. 3 and 4 (not shown) a gap is left between adjacent edges of the sheet; said gap being closed when the resin shrinks, and in the embodiments of Figs. 5 and 6 (not shown), the layer is of wire gauze, perforated metal, or knitted metallic braid. The insulation may be of bell-mouth construction and graded layers may be arranged one within the other in the resin of the insulator.
