Abstract

895,881. Overload-release clutches. TILTMAN LANGLEY Ltd. Oct. 7, 1960 [Oct. 9, 1959], No. 34332/59. Class 80 (2). A torque coupling, adapted to disengage permanently when the torque reaches a predetermined figure, comprises balls 34 housed in adjustable depth recesses in control part 16 and pressed axially into V-grooves 35 in control part 24 by plungers 40, acting through the annular plate 42, and urged to the left by springs 48 engaging against an adjustable abutment, the plungers and springs being mounted in a collar 44 located axially by circlip 46 and secured to the centre sleeve 2 by a key (not shown). The control part 16 and the clutch part 10 are axially free but coupled together for rotary drive by pin 18 secured in the flange of clutch part 10. The connector 22 integral with the control part 24 is thrust, via the ring 28, against flange 30 on centre sleeve 2 which is axially fixed. A ring 4, formed with clutch teeth 8, is secured to the sleeve 2 and co-operates with clutch teeth 12 formed on part 10. The coupling is arranged so that as the torque increases the balls 34 ride up the sides of the V-grooves 35 and on reaching the desired maximum the balls ride out of the V-grooves on to the surface of plate 24 moving the control part 16, via plate 42 against the thrust of the plungers 40, lowering the torque such that the clutch part 10 is moved to the right by the springs 20 thus disengaging the clutch teeth. In another embodiment a weight 54, housed in the collar 44 can move radially outwards against spring 56 and is arranged to provide increased torque at low speeds by means of spring 58 urging shoulder 68 of weight 54 against plate 42. Thus greater pressure must be overcome before the control plate 16 and balls 34 can disengage. At high R.P.M. this weight moves outwards to a disengaged position. The clutch is re-engaged by rotating control part 16.
