Abstract
A composition for simultaneously cleaning and phosphating a metal surface contains an ethylene oxide condensation detergent, a hydrocarbon solvent for grease and oil, an aqueous acidic phosphating solution and an emulsifier. Specified ethylene oxide condensates have the general formulae RCOO(C2H4O)nH where R is a C11-19 alkyl radical and n = 7-13 and <FORM:0895275/III/1> where R is a C9-14 alkyl radical and n = 7-14. Suitable hydrocarbon solvents are kerosene and aromatics of coal tar or petroleum origin. Suitable emulsifiers are alkali metal soaps, petroleum sulphonate, alkyl sulphate or sulphonate, esters of alkali metal neutralised sulphosuccinate, compounds having the general formulae RCON(CH2CH2O)xH2 and RN(CH2CH2O)xH2 where R is an alkyl group and x = 5 - 50, and compounds having the general formula RCOO(CH2CH2O)xH where R is an alkyl group and x = 5 or 6 or 14-50, or R is an alkyl group not containing 11-19 carbon atoms and x = 5-50. The composition may also contain tri- and hexa-valent chromium ions and molybdenum ions.ALSO:A composition for simultaneously cleaning and phosphating a metal surface contains an aqueous acidic phosphating solution, a hydrocarbon solvent for grease and oil, an emulsifier and an ethylene oxide condensation detergent. Specified phosphating solutions comprise phosphoric acid together with tetrasodium pyrophosphate or trisodium phosphate. Suitable hydrocarbon solvents are kerosene and aromatics of petroleum or coal tar origin. Suitable emulsifiers are alkali metal soaps, petroleum sulphonate, alkyl sulphate or sulphonate, esters of alkali metal neutralised sulphosuccinate, compounds having the general formulae RCON (CH2 CH2O)x H2 and RN (CH2 CH2O)x H2 where R is an alkyl group and x=5-50, and compounds having the general formulae RCOO (CH2 CH2O)xH where R is an alkyl group and x=5 or 6 or 14-50, or R is an alkyl group not containing 11-19 carbon atoms and x=5-50. Specified ethylene oxide detergents have the general formulae RCOO (C2H4O)n H where R is a C11-19 alkyl radical and n= 7-13, and <FORM:0895275/II/1> where R is a C9-14 alkyl radical and n=7-14. The composition may also contain tri- or hexa-volent chromium ions and molybdenum ions. Steel surfaces may be treated.
