The jib 1 of a mobile crane can be luffed rearwardly beyond the vertical to support a load 4 against the jib. The load may comprise a detachable, bottom discharge skip 5 (Fig. 6), or a lifting fork 6 (Fig. 8) which are guided for movement along the jib.
