Abstract
Racemic 2 - methyl - 3 - hydroxy - 5 - dimethylaminomehyl tetrahydrofuran of the steric ormula <FORM:0894192/IV (b)/1> is prepared by reducing 2-methyl-3-oxo-5-dimethyl-aminomethyl tetrahydrofuran of the steric formula <FORM:0894192/IV (b)/2> or a mixture in which this stereoisomer forms a substantial part, with an alkali metal-earth metal hydride. The invention may also be combined with the steps of producing the starting material either by the hydrogenation in the presence of palladium charcoal or by reduction with lithium aluminium hydride of 2 - methyl - 3 - oxo - 5 - dimethylamino - 2, 3 - dihydrofuran. The basic alcohol may be converted into halides of the racemic muscarine base by reaction with methyl halides and into quaternary salts in general by reaction with alkyl and aralkyl halides and sulphates.
