Abstract
Bicyclic alpha -hydroxylactones of the formula <IMAGE> in which the substituents are defined in Claim 1, are prepared by a stereoselective process. In this process, the lateral oxo group of corresponding lactones is reduced using a potassium trialkylborohydride. The resulting compounds can be used as intermediates in the preparation of prostaglandins.
