Abstract

The invention comprises compounds of the formula:-<FORM:0905100/IV (b)/1> and acid addition salts thereof (R represents -OH, -OCH3 or -OCH2OCH3 and W represents = CH2 or <FORM:0905100/IV (b)/2> together with a process for their preparation by reacting a morphinone derivative of the formula:- <FORM:0905100/IV (b)/3> in which R1 represents -OCH3 or -OCH2OCH3 with triphenylphosphomethylene to convert the 6-keto group to a 6-methyllene group, which may if desired be hydrogenated to a 6-methyl group. The 3-methoxymethyl group may be cleaved with acid prior to the hydrogenation step to give the 3-hydroxy compound and the 3-hydroxy group may be etherified by reaction with diazomethane. Detailed examples are given. 14-Hydroxy-morphinone - 3 - methoxymethyl ether is prepared from 14-hydroxymorphinone and chloromethyl methyl ether, and is hydrogenated over palladium charcoal to give 14-hydroxy - dihydromorphinone-3-methoxymethyl ether.
