Abstract

894,183. Sewing machines. PFAFF A. G., G.M. Feb. 8, 1961 [Feb. 18, 1960], No. 4650/61. Class 112. In a sewing machine with differentially driven upper and lower work-feeding rollers, a friction or other yielding clutch is incorporated in the drive to the roller which is driven at the higher speed. A lower shaft 2, driven by variable speed gearing 4 carries a feed roller 3 and is connected via a friction coupling 13 to a chain 12 which drives the upper shaft 6. A vertical shaft 8 is supplied by gearing 7 to shaft 6 and by gearing 9 to an upper roller 10 co-operating with roller 3. The gearing is so arranged that roller 10 is driven faster than roller 3. The friction coupling comprises a sprocket 19, for chain 12, freely journalled on shaft 2, and engaged on opposite sides by friction linings 17 carried by discs 14 and 15. Disc 14 is rigid with shaft 2 and disc 15 is slidably and non-rotatably coupled to shaft 2. Spring discs 21 are interposed between disc 15 and a knob 25 screwed on the end of shaft 2 for varying the degree of friction in the coupling.
