Abstract
893,937. Packaging-machines; cartons. METAL BOX CO. Ltd. June 13, 1960 [Aug. 7, 1959], No. 27140/59. Classes 18 and 94(1). A filled carton having lid flaps 7, 8, 9 has the lid folded down and is thrust into a heat sealing chamber on a rotatable carrier, this operation folding and receiving the flaps against walls 2, 3, 4 of the carton. The carton then passes into a cooling chamber on the carrier. The carton may be completely wax-coated and thermoplastic material of a higher melting point than the wax may be applied to the flaps before waxing. Alternatively, the coating may be of thermoplastic resin. The cartons are fed to the carrier 18 by a conveyer 12, a bar 15 folding down the lids. The carrier comprises a series of contiguous upper and lower chambers 39, 22. The chamber 22 is electrically heated and the chamber 39 cooled by circulating liquid. Beneath each pair of chambers is a vertically movable pusher 60 operated by a fixed cam 65 to raise each carton into the lower heating chamber from the conveyer 12. After the carton has travelled about 180 degrees, the pusher rises again to transfer it to the cooling chamber 39. This movement causes a carton previously in the chamber 39 to rise above the carrier and to be guided on to a discharge conveyer 69.
