[Class 94 (i)] A cartoning machine in which the article to be wrapped is advanced against the carton blank while contained within the lower end of a chute through which the article is delivered and which comprises side walls corresponding in shape to the shape of the articles, means being provided for folding the walls of the carton around the lower end of the chute, means for withdrawing the chute from the carton and for retaining the article in the latter and further means for completely folding the carton to cover the remaining face of the article,. A carton blank for wrapping an article in the form of a cube is fed to a carrier 10 by means of a punch 6 which feeds the blank through a die 5, Fig. 3, which shapes the blank, as shown in Fig. 2, to form trough-like portions for embracing two opposite side walls of the article to be wrapped. Each blank comprises two relatively narrow strips 7 and 8 disposed at right angles in the form of a cross, the trough-like portions 7 being disposed, one on each side of strip 8. The carrier is moved and disposed below a chute 1, Fig. 6, which delivers an article on to the blank, the sides and ends of which are folded about the lower end of the chute by folding blades 11 associated with the carrier. Means are provided to remove the chute from the carton, the article being retained in the carton by the pressure of plunger 3. The carrier is then moved to a position in which two wiping elements 12, Figs. 8 and 9 turn the outer ends 7a of the carton over the top face of the article. On withdrawal of wiping elements 12, a third wiping element 13 which folds over end tongue 14, a fourth wiping element folding over the remaining tongue 16 simultaneously with the withdrawal of element 13. A heating element may be provided to contact an adhesive, applied to the last-mentioned strip, which becomes tacky on the application of heat, to seal this tongue to the part of the carton below it. The completed carton may then pass under a cooling plate which contacts and cools the just heated part of the carton. The various steps of the operation take place during the intermittent rotation of a rotor on which the carrier is mounted and which brings the carrier successively into positions opposite stages for effecting each particular step.
