[Also in Group XVII] A device for heat sealing the triangular flaps 5 projecting from the closed end of a filled bag 1 comprises sealing jaws on a drum &c. which grip the flaps and transport the bag, while sealing, to a discharge position. Bags' 1 are fed forward in holders 3 on a conveyer 2 beneath a plate 7 which folds the sealing seam 4 and flaps 5 into the horizontal plane. The flaps are then folded into the vertical plane by elements, and Shear blades 8, 9 operating in a horizontal plane (not vertically, as shown), cut off portions 10 of the flaps to facilitate opening for contents discharge by inserting a straw or pouring. The flaps pass between jaws 17 and discs 12 on the sealing drum. The jaws are pivoted on lugs 15 and oscillated during drum rotation by a fixed cam 20. The flaps are gripped, heaters for the jaws are energized and the drum lifts each bag clear of the conveyer and carries it to a discharge position. Here the jaws open and an ejector 23 operated by a cam 27 deposits the bag on a shoot or table 24. The apparatus may be used without heating the sealing jaws and then functions simply to remove bags from the conveyer.
