Abstract

893,211. Heat treatment of silicon iron alloys. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. April 28, 1959 [May 26, 1958 (2)], No. 14436/59. Class 72. [Also in Group XXII] A method of preparing cube texture magnetic sheet from a cast metal composed of 2-6% silicon 0À02-0À1% carbon and the balance iron comprises hot rolling with a total reduction of 40%, cold rolling with intermediate annealing and a final anneal under non oxidising conditions, the hot rolled band being decarburised and annealed to a carbon content of less than 0À01%. The hot rolled band may be warm rolled at 150-450‹C. with at least one reduction of 40-85% and annealed at 900-1300‹C. under non-oxidising conditions. The original casting may be of random crystal orientation or have a columnar crystal structure but sufficient carbon must be present to produce austenite in the hot rolled stage. The hot rolling temperature may be 800-1350‹C., the intermediate annealing temperature may be 800-1150‹C. in a dry hydrogen atmosphere and the final anneal may be at 900-1350‹C. in a dry hydrogen atmosphere. Decarburising may be carried out at 1000- 1350‹C. in dry hydrogen, or 700-1050‹C. in wet nitrogen, or in a barium chloride bath at 800- 1350‹C. Specification 870,209 is referred to.
