Abstract

Copolymers are made which consist of acrylamide and N-tert.-butylacrylamide in weight proportions of 3:7 to 8:2. The monomers are preferably copolymerized in aqueous solution with the addition of an organic solvent miscible with water, e.g. methanol, ethanol, isopropanol, acetone and dioxane, and a catalyst such as a persulphate, hydrogen peroxide, benzoyl, diacetyl, cumene, cyclohexanone or lauroyl peroxides, azobisisobutyronitrile, or a redox system, e.g. a mixture of a persulphate and sodium bisulphite, pyrosulphite, dithionite or formaldehyde sulphoxylate. The catalyst may be added gradually or portionwise to the reaction mixture. At the end of polymerization the copolymer may be recovered by drying or by precipitation, or, if if it is desired to obtain an aqueous solution of copolymer, the solvent may be removed from the reaction mixture by heating in vacuo. The copolymers are used for thickening mixtures of water and organic solvents which are miscible with water, e.g. C1-C3 alkanols, ethylene glycol and its monoethyl ether, acetone, dioxane glycerine and dimethyl formamide.
