891,997. Removing kernels from nuts. CROUCHER, A. H. Aug. 3, 1960 [Oct. 30, 1959], No. 36870 /59. Class 58. Apparatus for removing the kernel from the shell of split nuts, such as coconuts, comprises a plurality of blunt scraper blades 10 on a rotating head 9, Fig. 1, against which the exposed kernel of a split nut is held, and means for rotating the head at a high speed. The head is secured to a spindle 8, which is rotatably mounted in the casing 1 of the apparatus. The means for rotating the head may comprise a gear wheel 7, secured to the spindle, meshing with a gear wheel 6 turned by a crank handle 5 or, alternatively, an electric motor and worm gearing within the casing. The head is provided with a spring-loaded guard 11. The head may be hemispherical and the blades may be arranged along great circles coplanar with the axis of the spindle 8. The blades may be square-sectioned, generally rectangular protuberances on the head. The head, blades and guard may be made of stainless steel.
