Abstract

891,860. Suction box belts of Fourdrinier paper-making machines. BELOIT IRON WORKS. July 24, 1959 [Nov. 19, 1958], No. 25537/59. Class 96. The upper run of a travelling belt 11a, e.g. of rubber is interposed between the wire-cloth of a Fourdrinier paper-making machine, and the top of the suction box, the belt 11a having staggered rows of grooves 43, 27, 31 extending transversely across it and drained through openings 51, 37, 39 which register with openings 87, 57c, &o. in a " deckle " 79, and bearing strips 57, 58, &c. extending longitudinally along the top of the suction box; grooves 57a, 57b, 58a, 58b, &c. providing channels for water under pressure to lubricate the lower face of the belt 11a and seal against ingress of air. The openings 87, 57c, &c. register with slots 78, 63, &c. in a support plate 71 formed of strips secured to each other by lugs 68, 69. An upstanding lug 79b at the outer edge of the " deckle strip " 79, threaded to receive a bolt 81 allows adjustment of the strip 79 to block off belt-drainage openings at the margins of the belt 11a according to the width of paper being made. The grooves in the belt 11a may have straight diverging sides extending between flat floor portions and vertical top portions. The belt is kept on course with the aid of a pivoted guide roll bearing against its lower run.
