Apparatus for dissolving, mixing, emulsifying, homogenizing or the like, mixtures of sparingly soluble solid substances with liquid substances, e.g. Xanthate and dilute caustic soda solution for the manufacture of viscose, wherein the mixture is treated by a separating container 1, Fig. 2, and emulsifier 5 and recirculated by a pump 6, or led away for use through a valve 8 and pipe 9 whilst untreated mixture is fed continuously to the container, is characterised by the interpositioning of an apportioning device 12 between the container and the emulsifier 5, the device 12 ensuring that the mixture supplied to the emulsifier is not too viscous, and is thus pumpable. The container 1 has stirring mechanism 2 and the mixture separates into portions consisting of predominantly solid component and predominantly liquid components. Referring to Fig. 3 one form of apportioning device 12 comprises a mixing space 17, connected by pipes 13 and 4a with the top of the container 1 and the emulsifier, respectively, the space 17 surrounding a cylinder 16 connected by a pipe 4 with the bottom of the container 1 and containing a worm 14 rotated by a shaft 15, the cylinder being perforated and provided on the inside with cutting teeth. The predominantly solid and heavier portion of the mixture is predisintegrated by the worm and cylinder and mixed with the excess predominantly liquid and lighter portion of the mixture entering the space 17. The pump 6 recirculates the treated mixtures when desired through a valve 10 and a pipe 11 to the container I at a position between the top of the pipe 13 and the outlet 3. If the solid component is lighter than the liquid component then the connections of the pipes 4 and 13 are interchanged at the device 12. In a modification described with reference to Figs. 4 and 5 (not shown) the device 12 is provided with a rotary disintegrating cylinder provided on its surface with teeth. In another form the device 12 forms part of the bottom of the container 1 and the predisintegrating worm is driven by the shaft of the stirrer 2.
