Material is transferred from the hold of a ship 3 to a hopper 51 on a boom 16, which is luffably mounted on a carriage 9, by a grab 50 on a column 42 which is connected to the end of the boom by means which maintain the column 42 substantially vertical during luffing of the boom and which may be adjusted to bring the grab over the hopper 51. The column 42 slides in a sleeve 33 which is pivoted to a cross-member 32 pivotally mounted at 31 on a support 26, which is pivoted at 25 to the boom 16, the sleeve 33 and column 42 being connected to a counterweight 39 by means of a cable 36 passing round sheaves 34, 35, 37, 38. A cable 29 passing round sheaves 28 and 27, mounted on the support 26 and boom 16 respectively, to a stationary point 30 maintains the support 26 in substantially constant orientation during luffing of the boom 16. When the grab 50 is loaded, a winch 49 is operated to raise the column 42 in the sleeve 33 by means of a cable 45, and a winch 24 is operated to luff the boom by means of a cable 23. A motor 40 is then operated to swing the grab 50 over a hopper 51 by means of rods 41b, 41d pivoted between the sleeve 33 and a crank 41 on the motor.
