Abstract
<PICT:0890208/IV (c)/1> Wet textile material at atmospheric temperature is heated without materially changing its water content by subjecting it to the action of a steam/air mixture after first raising its temperature to a point not more than 10 DEG C. below the dewpoint of the steam/air mixture by application of radiant heat while the material is sufficiently enclosed to prevent substantial loss of water by evaporation. The textile material may be staple fibre, carpets or other pile fabrics and may be treated in apparatus comprising a first enclosure 7 containing a source of radiant heat, e.g. infra-red lamps 10, 11, a second enclosure 12 containing steam source 14 and means for moving the textile material through the enclosures, e.g. driven rollers 3, 24 adapted to derive a length of the textile material or a conveyer belt carrying staple fibres. Before being passed through the first enclosure the material may be dyed, e.g. by passage through a trough of dye liquor 2 and between the rollers of a padding mangle. The textile material is preferably heated to 75 DEG C.-85 DEG C. by radiant heat and then to at least 90 DEG C. by the steam/air mixture, which may have a dry bulb temperature of 110 DEG C.-115 DEG C. and a wet bulb temperature of 90 DEG C.-95 DEG C. Examples are given. Specifications 772,030, 774,925, 781,930, 785,120, 785,222, 797,946 and 798,121 are referred to.
