Abstract

<PICT:0804259/IV (c)/1> Fabric or yarn to be dyed or otherwise liquid treated is passed between radiant heaters 25 into a bath 15. Excess liquid is removed and the dye equalized over the fabric by rubbercovered rollers 17, 19, and the fabric passes upwards through a hood 43, which collects steam from the bath or is otherwise provided with steam and prevents the fabric from cooling, into one of a plurality of wheeled chambers 13 where it is wound up and maintained at a suitable temperature and humidity. Each chamber 13 has a closable inlet 28 and may be heated and filled with steam to a temperature slightly higher than the temperature of impregnation. Each chamber may be of doublewalled construction, and water in troughs 31 may be evaporated by heater coils therein in order to maintain a moisture saturated atmosphere. After one of the chambers 13 has been loaded the opening 28 is closed and the chamber is removed on rails 35 and replaced by another. The hood exit 45 is of small cross-section and is as close as practicable to the opening 28 in the chamber 13. The rollers 27 in the loaded chambers are slowly rotated by automatic control devices to provide distribution of the dye, and at end positions the loaded roller may be unwound. The bath 15 may be heated, but if corrosive chemicals are used the impregnation may take place in cold condition and the material be heated by radiation heaters or injected steam in the hood. In a modification the chambers 13 are at the same level as the bath 15, the fabric receiving openings then being in the vertical side walls.
