Abstract
889,960. Collision guards for vehicles. GERIN, J. J. M. J. March 20, 1959 [March 26, 1958], No. 9784/59. Class 103(2). In order to deflect a motor vehicle from an obstacle with which it is in collision, it is provided at the front and in place of the usual bumper with a conventional spare wheel 1, Figs. 3 and 4, rotatable, about a substantially vertical axis, upper and lower rubbing or deflecting strakes 10, 11 extending from the sides of the wheel, rearwardly of the vehicle. As shown in Fig. 1, the wheel 1 is supported on a dummy hub 2 rotatable on a stub axle 3 secured to a plate 4 integral with the bottom 5 of the vehicle frame. A movable plate 6, Fig. 2, holding the top of the axle is pivoted at 7 to a cross-strut 8 and stay plates 9 connect the strut 8 and plate 4. At each side of the wheel the upper and lower strakes 10, 11 are connected to the plate 6 and bottom 5 by a bolt and a nut 16. Embellishing guides 12, Fig. 4, are also pivoted on the bolts. If desired, more than one wheel may be provided as described with reference to Figs. 12 and 13 (not shown). Also the guides 12 may be replaced by rollers. The upper strakes 10 may form parts of the front mudguards. In another form they may constitute the two main longitudinal members of the chassis.
