Abstract

889,233. Toy missiles. QUERCETTI, A. March 24, 1960 [March 24, 1959], No. 10396/60. Class 132(3) [Also in Group XXI] A toy missile comprises a casing having two parts 1, 3, hinged together at 2, which pivot open at the highest point in the missiles' flight. The parts 1, 3 are held closed during the missile's ascent by a longitudinally sliding latch 4 controlled by an L-shaped balancing unit 8 pivoted at 9. The latch is urged by a rubber ring 5 or a spring to the open position but, as shown in Fig. 2, is held closed by a pin 7 on the unit 8 bearing against tongues 6. The tension in the rubber ring tends to pivot the unit 8 to the position shown in broken lines and thus release the latch but, during upward flight of the missile, this pivoting is prevented by the effect of the air flow on an aerodynamic tongue 12 provided on the longer arm of the unit 8. At the highest point of the missile's flight, the air speed is a minimum and the tension in the rubber ring is then sufficient for the tongues 6 to pivot the unit 8 out of their way thus allowing the latch to open and the casing part 3 to pivot open and release any contents which may be present. The contents may comprise a parachutist or a device for slowing the missile's descent, e.g. a parachute or rotor.
