Abstract
751,183. Projectiles. BACHEM, B. July 6, 1954 [July 7, 1953], No. 19792/54. Classes 9(1) and 9(2) A projectile comprising two shell halves 1, 2, forming when closed an elongated casing, is held closed until it reaches the vortex of its trao jectory by the aerodynamic forces set up during flight. The halves 1, 2 are hinged together at the nose 4 and the tail vanes project from an annular member 5 which is tapered towards the nose of the shell. Around the pivot of the hinge is a weak spring 6 tending to force the halves apart, but of such strength that the halves remain closed as long as there is any external counteracting force. The annular member 5 may be replaced by flaps which hold a catch fastened until the areodynamic forces approach zero, when the flaps open out and release the catch. The catch may also be operated by a trailing parachute. The projectile may be used to parachute meteorological instruments or to house and release flares, advertising materials or propaganda leaflets. By. making the shell halves of wing or airfoil shape when opened out, the casing acts as a helical blade. which rotates as the projectile falls. The device can also be used as a toy.
