589,346. Bombs &c. LAX, W. L., and HARRISON, J. July 1, 1944, No. 12677. [Class 9 (i)] A bomb or stores container may be dropped under the control of the tail, or a parachute. The tail is expansible and expanded by the parachute. The parachute and tail are released by static lines to the aircraft. The tail comprises segments 12 mounted on a parallel linkage comprising arms 16 and rods 13, the latter having pivoted extension rods 131, carrying latch ends 132, which retain the tail collapsed, by engagement with projections 101, with which they are held in engagement by a split ring 18, adapted to be released by a pin 183 and a static line 19, to allow erection of the tail. Some of the parachute rigging lines 22 are connected to the latch ends 132, and some to similar members 142, by pins 221, and on release of the bomb the parachute pivots the rods 131, raising the rods 13 to expand the tail and the pins 221 slide out of the slots 133 to release the parachute from the bomb. Hooks 134 on the rods 13 engage pins 113 on the tail tube 11 to hold the tail erected. The parachute is contained beneath flaps 24, secured by a wire having a loop engaged by a pin connected to a static line, a further line from the pin to the parachute ensures the opening of the latter. When the bomb is to drop under control of the parachute, the static line 19 is disconnected from the aircraft so that it fails to act.
