Abstract

889,142. Corrugated boards; laminating. SOC. INDUSTRIELLE DES EMBALLAGES KRAFT. May 27, 1958 [July 25, 1957], No. 16934/58. Classes 96 and 140. A composite board (Fig. 1) is produced by superimposing the corrugated faces of two boards, one of which is a single corrugated board and the other having corrugations formed by a series of separated ribbed longitudinal members adhered to a plane sheet, and then crushing the assembly so that the adhesively coated crests of the corrugations interpenetrate and adhere together. A machine (Fig. 6) for producing the board comprises a part I (including a machine M<SP>1</SP>) for producing a single corrugated board A-B with adhesive applied to the crests of the corrugations, a part II (including a machine M<SP>2</SP>) for producing a board comprising longitudinal members C adhered to a sheet D, and a part III for uniting the sub-assemblies A-B and C-D. In the machine M<SP>1</SP> a band B<SP>1</SP> from a reel 10 is corrugated by fluted or grooved rollers 11, 12 and adhered to an adhesively coated plane sheet A from a reel 9. The sub-assembly A-B is carried by conveyers 16, 17 to drying chambers 19 and, finally, adhesive is applied to the crests of the corrugations by a device 21 before the sub-assembly is united with the sub-assembly C-D produced by machine M<SP>2</SP> in which (Fig. 9) a band C<SP>1</SP> is cut into strips C<SP>2</SP> by means of cutting wheels 30 bearing against a roller 29 over which the band passes, the resultant strips C<SP>2</SP> being ribbed by passing over teeth 41 of a forming comb 35 and between rolls 36, 37 through which the teeth 41 of the comb extend, the upper roll 36 having grooves 52 to accommodate the teeth, the lower roll 37 carrying a plane Sheet D to which adhesive has been applied by a device 81, so that the longitudinal ribbed members adhere thereto. In part III of the machine the sub-assembly A-B is superimposed on C-D and the composite board passed between an endless belt 103 and heating tables 101, 102, pressure being applied by rollers 109. The final board may then be cut to size, e.g. as required in packaging.
