Abstract
888,570. Feeding webs. WITTON-JAMES Ltd. Jan. 28, 1960 [Jan. 28, 1959], No. 3058/59. Class 100(1) A detector for detecting when the leading end of a replacement roll is in a position for the initiation of a splicing operation comprises a first part which is stationary and a second part arranged to rotate with the replacemnt roll without contacting the first part, the two parts providing an electrical impedance, the reactance of which varies with the distance between the two parts. As shown, the stationary part 11, Fig. 2, comprises metal plates 13 and 14 mounted in a common plane within an earthed metal screening box 15 having a non-metallic cover 16. The plates 13, 14 form a capacitor in a circuit 18 fed by a thermionic valve oscillator 17, the second part in the form of a metallized tab 12 rotates with the replacement roll 2. The circuit 18 includes an amplifier, followed by a diode, and a triode. The output from the diode varies the grid potential of the triode and thus the conductance of the triode. A relay 19, included in the anode circuit of the triode initiates the operation of splicing brushes 5, Fig. 1 (not shown). The triode conducts when the capacitor reactance is at a minimum value, i.e. when the metallized tab 12 Fig. 2, is closely adjacent the plates 13, 14 and the leading end of the roll 2 is in splicing position. In a modification, the plates 13, 14 form part of an A.C. bridge circuit, one diagonal of which is connected to the oscillator and the other to the circuit 18.
