Abstract
840,552. Electric tests. BRITISH INSULATED CALLENDER'S CABLES Ltd. Nov. 19,1957 [Nov. 20,1956], No. 35518/56. Class 37. The wall thickness of metal articles, such as sheet-strip, tubing and cable sheaths 3, is determined by passing a constant current through the wall from electrodes 3 so that a magnetic field is produced, and adjusting the height of a conductor 4 in series with the sheet path so that the resultant magnetic field, as detected by a ferrite-cored coil 6 is zero. The height of the conductor as measured on the adjusting screw 11 is a measure of wall thickness. An alternating supply is used and the coil is tuned to the A.C. frequency by capacitor 7. The contact members are held in a frame 5 of heat and electrical insulating material which also supports the coil 6. In an alternative arrangement (not shown) the field is arranged to deflect the electron path in a triode valve the heater of which is fed with A.C. and the grid of which consists of a slotted plate through which the electrons pass. Thus the output is a series of " squarish " pulses.
