Abstract

888,539. Dynamic balancing apparatus. DAWE INSTRUMENTS Ltd. July 15, 1960 [July 29, 1959], No. 26052/59. Class 106 (2). A rotary workpiece being dynamically balanced is carried on a member 4 supported by balls or rollers 6 working in grooves 20 in a base member 1, the grooves extending transversely to the shaft of the workpiece and being curved in a vertical plane, so that movement of the member 4 from its equilibrium position produces a small upward displacement. The shaft of the workpiece is supported in a V-bearing 5 carried on the member 4. Complementary grooves 20 are formed in both the member 4 and the base member 1 on each side of the axis of the shaft. Each groove is fitted with a hardened steel strip 17 and a roller 6 runs between the strips 17. The upper member 4 is fitted with side-plates 8a, 8b to prevent coarse axial movement, and the plate 8b is extended downwards and is coupled to a vibration measuring unit at 3. Pins 10 in the base member 1 co-operate with slots 9 in the upper member to limit its movement. It is stated that the natural frequency of the system depends solely on the radii of the grooves and is unaffected by the size or weight of the workpiece.
