Abstract

In a cyclic process for producing water gas having a back-run in each run period the final portion of the back-run is operated with air instead of steam and is continued until the nitrogen content of the gas passing into the generator or of the gas produced rises to a predetermined level, e.g. to above 10%. The end of the back-run period may be followed by a short up-run with steam before commencement of the blow period. Carburetting of the water gas, if desired, is effected during the uprun of a run period. During a blow period when the plant employed has a carburetting and a superheating zone secondary and tertiary air may be admitted to the blow-gases respectively as they pass through the carburetting and superheating zones. The cessation of the final portion of the backrun may be determined automatically by a chemical or physical property of a gas sample withdrawn from a suitable sampling position.
