Abstract

887,906. Agglutinated fibrous sheet materials. BRITISH NYLON SPINNERS Ltd. Sept. 30, 1960, No. 33557/60. Class 140. A non-woven polyamide fabric comprises a blend of unfused staple fibres of a first polyamide and fused staple fibres of a second lower melting-point polyamide serving to bond the whole together, the former said fibres being present in the fabric in the greater proportion by weight. Specified fibres are, for the higher melting-point fibres, polyhexamethylene adipamide (nylon 66), and, for the lower melting- point fibres, polycaproamide (nylon 6) and polyomegaaminoundecanoic acid (nylon 11). The melting-point of the lower melting-point fibres should be some 40‹ C. below that of the higher melting-point fibres. The fabric may be made by blending and carding the two types of fibres and subjecting the carded web to heat and pressure such that the fibres of lower melting- point are caused to soften and flow without causing fusion or any substantial degradation to the fibres of higher melting-point. Examples disclose the preparation of two fabrics comprising nylon 66 and nylon 6 in the proportions of 75 to 25% and 95 to 5% by weight, respectively. The carded webs were subjected to a pressure of 30 pounds per square inch and a temperature of 230‹ C. for 15 seconds.
