Abstract

1,141,363. Non-woven fabrics. I.C.I. FIBRES Ltd. 28 Jan., 1966 [20 Feb., 1965], No. 7427/65. Heading D1R. A non-woven fabric comprises a continuous web containing at least 5%, preferably at least 20%, by weight of composite fibres, a proportion of the fibres in the web being oriented in planes normal to the web surfaces, and contiguous fibres being adhesively united by the adhesive characteristics of the potentially adhesive component of the composite fibres. The two components of the composite fibres are preferably arranged in distinct zones along the length of the fibres. The fibres in the web are preferably crimped and the crimp may be developed at the same time as the adhesive union of the fibres. The treatment rendering the adhesive component tacky may be heat treatment or a chemical treatment e.g. with formaldehyde or nitric acid solution. The web may be heated by hot water, steam, oil, hot air of other gaseous or liquid media. The web may be pressed during or after the treatment to render the adhesive component tacky. The fibres are oriented in planes normal to the web surfaces as by needling. Various examples of suitable composite fibres are given including trilobal heterofilaments.
